Name: Waverley Cemetery Gates
Location: Waverley Cemetery, Thomas Street, Waverley, New South Wales
The entrance gateway demarcates an important threshold for visitors entering the cemetery. Built c.1880 as part of the cemetery perimeter wall, the entrance gateway is constructed with stone piers; stone base courses and decorative ironwork panels, flanked by two wings of decorative iron fencing set in sandstone, each wing approximately 10 metres in length. The original sandstone masonry and the original ironwork wing fence facing north onto Trafalgar Street were in a deteriorated condition where the exposure of stone and iron components to salt laden air had resulted in advanced weathering.
LSJ undertook restoration and reconstruction works including removal of ironwork to be restored and repaired in a factory setting, where original decorative elements were salvaged and replaced as part of the reconstruction works.
