Name: Queen Mary Building
Location: Camperdown, Sydney, New South Wales
The Queen Mary Building is a large purpose-built accommodation building, constructed in 1951-1956 to designs by Stephenson and Turner Architects. Built as a nurses’ home, the place operated as such until c.2002, catering for nurses employed at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (RPAH). Following its purchase by the University of Sydney, the building was adapted for student housing.
LSJ architects provided heritage advice regarding the conversion and upgrading works, identified surviving architectural details to be retained and reused as part of the overall scheme and prepared the Interpretation Strategy incorporating historic photographs and salvaged built features, which now decorate the common areas and hallways of the refurbished building.
