Name: Redstone
Location: Dundas, New South Wales
This State heritage listed dwelling was built in 1935 to designs by architect Walter Burley Griffin. An American student of Frank Lloyd Wright, Griffin is one of the most acclaimed designers to have practised in Australia, and Redstone is the last house designed in Australia before Walter Burley Griffin departed for India.
Almost completely intact both internally and externally, and carefully maintained, Redstone is owned by the family of the original commissioning client. A sandstone and brick single-storey house with ‘Super-6’ corrugated asbestos cement two level shallow pitched roof it was in need of careful and mostly invisible repairs. A particular challenge was replacing the roofing with fibre cement sheeting in the same profile to ameliorate the health risk posed by the disintegrating asbestos. This work was undertaken as a S57(2) Standard Exemption and interpreted the form, detail and colour of the original Griffin designed roof.
