Name: Hayden Orpheum Picture Palace
Location: Military Road, Cremorne, New South Wales
North Sydney Council, at the behest of the local community, commissioned LSJ to answer the question of whether the Hayden Orpheum Picture Palace warranted listing on the NSW State Heritage Register.
A rare surviving suburban Art Deco style cinema, still in operation, the “Cremorne Orpheum” was built in 1935 to designs by noted theatre architect George N. Kenworthy. The theatre was celebrated in Building magazine and Decoration and Glass in that same year. Following a period of use as a shopping arcade with a much-reduced cinema, it was later lovingly restored and remodelled by noted Australian show businessman Mike Walsh in collaboration with theatre designer John Love.
LSJ concluded that the place was of historic, aesthetic, social, and associational significance on a local and State level, and recommended that it be included on the State Heritage Register. In 2024, the Hayden Orpheum Picture Palace was listed as a State heritage item by the Heritage Council of NSW.
